Bad quality of videos on Instagram vs good quality recorded via phone

Hello fellow forum members. I'm reaching out here again because I'm at my wits' end. I use a GoPro 11 camera primarily for my bike trips. I shoot videos vertically as I intend to upload them on Instagram. All the videos look great on my phone or in the Quick app. I record in 2.7k 60fps or 4k60fps. However, when I upload the footage to Instagram, the video is completely ruined. It doesn't matter how I export the video, whether in HD, FHD, 2k, or 4k. Reels always end up being of poor quality. Additionally, when I record with my phone in 4k 30fps, those videos look good on Instagram as well. Please help, as I'm about to throw this camera in the trash.

Probably something to do with the way Instagram compresses the video when uploaded - I used to have the same with YouTube originally until I realized they compress using a different codec when uploaded in 4K, which makes a huge difference. I don't use Instagram, but they may have something similar. Its most likely the video exported is not in a container that Instagram natively works well with.

I don't know if this helps, but the GoPro 11 shoots in H265 codec. While this is newer technology, it also leaves behind all those devices that cannot parse it. I always convert to the older H264 codec when outputting my videos. The Handbrake app will convert your H265 videos to H264. So will the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Also, in my experience, it takes a lot of computer horsepower to successfully run 4K 60 fps video. Good luck!

It's true, that Instagram applies heavy compression to videos uploaded onto it, mainly in high-resolution or high-frame-rate footage. This compression reduces the quality of your videos, especially if they're originally recorded in 4K. I would suggest, try exporting your footage with different settings to see if there's any improvement. Or, lower the resolution of your footage before uploading it to Instagram
