Sharpening Low Sharpness in Post Processing

Hello all,

I took my new Hero 9 out and did some test footage on a hike in different lighting, different resolutions/frame rates, etc. just to get a feel for it. Watching videos before going out, I gathered that I should do sharpness at low and add the sharpness in post-processing, same with flat colors vs GoPro Color.

The color I was able to correct fairly well in post-processing, but I cannot for the life of me get the sharpness to look decent at all. I've tried doing it in DaVinci Resolve and watched a few good videos on what the different sharpness settings in there do, but literally nothing I do gives me a 4k/5k looking result. When I look at my iPhone videos that I took side by side, I prefer the iPhone with the sharpness. Does anyone have any good tips for sharpening low sharpness Hero 9 footage? What do you do to make it look professional and high resolution? Any tips at all are appreciated!

Welcome to the forum, well maybe you attach too much importance to this question but anyway..... what about giving the GoPro more sharpness while shooting?

As I mix in my vids GoPro shots with Mavic 2 Pro shots, I figured out that the extrem sharpness from the GoPro doesn't fit to the Mavic sharpness, so I let the GoPro sharpness at medium and pull up the sharpness from the Mavic a little bit.

To much sharpness looks not natural/comfortable for most people, usually I tune sharpness with Magix Pro but the best solution is to use Neat Video to have best results.

Thank you so much for your reply! This is what I was looking for, and you’re clearly a veteran on here, so thank you again.

I think thats exactly what I’m going to do my next time out. I was able to get it to a point where it looked good in Davinci Resolve, but it was way more work than it was worth in my opinion. I’m sure the auto sharpening by the GoPro would’ve been as good or better. I think I will try medium in-camera sharpening the next time out to see if I’m happier with the results.

End result for anyone that might be interested:

Yeah, nice vid with excellent color/contrast and interesting music - good work - panning sometimes to fast, the up and down movement by walking can get minimized with "ninja walk" and stabilization in post. As you have not much variety in the shots, the vid is much too long, after 3-4 minutes is all told/seen.
