Technical question...I was tweaking settings on my hero 5 black and after bumping it up to 2.7k I keep getting a card error about 2 minutes into filming. The problem does not occur after dropping it back to 1080p. I’m using 128g sandisk cards but they’re not the 4k cards.

Do “standard” cards just max out at 1080 or could the problem be something else?

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Yes the higher data volume (resolution and framerate) the better must be the card writing speed, so make sure to use best card quality for avoiding problems.
This is what I am using for shots up to 4K/60.

Thanks. I’ve only ever run my hero 5 on default settings so standard cards have been fine. I’ll run out and get a better one.

Samsung Pro is the best micro SD card as of right now.

Now, I use the SanDisk 32GB SD card, but I’m looking into the Samsung Pro 64GB micro SD card.

SanDisk micro sd cards aren’t known for their fast transfers, that’s the only reason why I say this.
