Is it possible to shoot using the USB for power... bypass the battery?

In other words, keep it plugged in for power and not have to change battery for long duration videos / timelapse.

Thanks

Yes all you do is plug in a powerbank, have you not tried it, let me guess you do not own one yet? (Smiles)

any powerbank, and or charger port, the computer port transfers info, that was the reason you see the connection issue?

It is funny how the DJI Osmo action camera prompts you do you want to connect and you say cancel then you can use the camera in a computer port, it shuts down the transmission, gopro does not offer a manual feature like that, so you can use a Powerbank, 12vdc power port, a 110-220 charger port, a laptop port if it is Non-transmission just a power port.
