I'm still shopping around. It doesn't appear I'll be able to get a GP any time soon as they're all sold out everywhere I've tried except for GPH4's. It's very tempting to get a GPH4S. One concern I have is I've read in several sources that the skeleton housing should be used as much as possible with the GPH4's to keep heat build up to a minimum. I would like to use my GP with my dog when we go hiking. Several areas where we hike have lakes or streams where it is possible that my dog could suddenly decide to go for a dip and dunk the GP. It's probably best if I use the waterproof housing just in case. How long can I use the waterproof housing before risking heat damage to the GP?

You'll be fine with the waterproof housing. I have no problems with it.
The only mode I would use a waterproof housing is with 4k recording - especially with the Black - since that really does produce a lot of heat.

The basic cam only records at 1080p max and has a lower end processing unit - it really doesn't give out much, if any, heat at all. Ive had one running for long periods and it barely gets warm. Its the silver and black that carry more heat due to the higher end processors.

Yes quite true, but the cam will operate will be hot to the touch, the good part is, will evaporate moisture inside, wear down the battery otherwise, the operating temps are 40 degree-110 . while camera operations are different. and to get that reading how hot it can feel, is to put a probe on it.

Like the Iphone the phone will shut down at 60 degree's behind a windshield in the Sun. We should be happy the cam does not do that.

I say not a thing wrong and case it, but you feel the need to keep it cool fan it.HD1080P or 4k, the cam is working the same. if you are asking me?

Thanks for the responses. I'm just wanting to make sure if I do purchase one of the more expensive cameras I won't accidentally cook it to death from trying to keep it dry.

I've read stories about GP's being water resistant even out of the waterproof housing. I'm a little bit skeptical of that. When I read one about a GP being retrieved from the bottom of Lake Michigan and continuing to function I knew that was too good to be true. I will use the waterproof backdoor. Thanks again.

The GoPro case is waterproof. but takes one mistake to have water seep in. GoPro cam itself is not waterproof, but resistant. We heard those stories, even seen the video.

I typically use my gopro ( hero 3 black and hero 4 silver) where outside temps are over 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the waterprrof housing, to keep the dust out. Never had a heat issue, except once using a poor quality sd card.

Some have had luck drying the camera out, but the camera itself is NOT water resistant, and I wouldn't risk purposefully letting any water near it whatsoever.

you can not stop Humidity, and that you let water get to, which we all have no control over.

You go on vacation. camera is sitting on a table, and you have it naked, he Honey, going outside to the terrace for a second to get this video shot? from a cool room, as soon as you stepped outside, turn the cam on, and starting to record, yep, water is on the camera due to the humidity. water introduced to your camera.

same thing goes inside with fog pads. different scenario.
