I just downloaded e new iOS iPad GoPro app which has been renamed Capture. It first asks me to login or create an account.

The previous app did not need a login to use. You had to connect to the camera, of course, but that didn't require any account or registration.

Is there a way to use the app without logging in, i.e. In a place without internet where you couldn't login like a ski slope?

This app update means I have lost functionality on my existing cameras.

Can this be correct?

I did not try to login. I would like to use the app without logging in.

I am concerned that there are many user situations where logging in would be impossible even if you wanted to.

For example, on a ski mountain, middle of a lake, etc. where you would have no internet connection. Or on an iPad without cellular connection away from wifi hot spots.

GoPro support has FAQ entries about it automatically logging out the user for various reasons including every 30 days just for security reasons. I can understand logging in/out of the app for cloud access reasons but I can't understand having to be logged into the app to use the camera I bought last year and didn't need to login. They have taken away key functionality.

I hope I am missing the "use the app without logging in" button but I cannot find it. Has anyone else found it? I don't see how a developer would require internet connection for a product specifically made and marketed to be taken to places without internet access.

Try signing out of the app then trying to use the app without logging back in.

Now imagine you are in a place without any internet connection and need to use the app.

My point:
1. The new app requires you to be logged in to connect to a camera, even the old ones
2. The old app did not have this requirement
3. GoPro will sign you out from time to time for security reasons. Their FAQ says you will be forced to login every 30 days at the minimum.
4. GoPro puts out video after video and promotional material demonstrating their product in remote locations.
5. Many of these remote locations will not have internet access.
6. What if you got signed out since your last use and you now pull out your cameras in a remote location and cannot sign back in?

You have now lost the ability to control the cameras with your phone which was a major selling point to me when buying GoPro cameras in the first place.

Sign out of the app. Do not sign back in.

Airplane mode is not signed out.

The app then does not function until you sign back in.

There will absolutely be a time when GoPro has signed you out (at least every 30 days by their FAQ) and you will be in a place with no internet and will be unable to sign back in. This means you cannot control cameras with the app which was a major selling point to me in the many GoPro cameras I already own.

I now see the issue you are talking about. Best to keep signed in, and if worried resign in still works the way described but once like you said signed out it is not good?

We are in no way connected to gopro.com nor the admins here, at all know any gopro people, You must pass this to gopro.com as feedback, when I am on Periscope I shall pass it to gopro.com as they do check in with me?

If anyone thinks its a concern they also should do so. if not this will neverget addressed. feedback is important.

WTF? Why do I have to LOG IN to use my Camera...That's creepy!!

I just purchased the GoPro Hero 4 Black a month ago at Best Buy. I used the camera with my Andriod phone several times and it worked great. My phone did an auto update and suddenly the new revision requires a LOGIN!! I am perplexed. I called tech support and I just got off the phone with "Charles". He said that this (Capture for Android) is the only version that GoPro supports and it requires a registration and login.

I am sorry but I refuse to REGISTER with GoPro just because I wan to continue using the camera functions that I purchased (in good faith).

Charles mentioned the "cloud" and eluded to cloud security etc...but the last thing I want to do is login to the cloud (or anyplace else) every time I use my camera.

I doubt that this is going to be well received. It's sort of creepy in my opinion.

All GoPro has to do is put a check box or toggle at the app start-up (splash screen) asking if I want to connect to the cloud. If I do, then it makes sense to require me to login...otherwise I should be able to use the App without having to log in.

The wifi connectivity and control from my Android (LG) phone is a HUGE reason why I purchased this camera.

Now I have to decide if I am going to try to return the camera or buy the LCD screen which allows me to see what I am shooting in real time. In my opinion this is a HUGE FAIL for GoPro and I am not happy.

I will also consider a class action suit...if there are enough people who feel the way i do... In short, I would sue them for removing functionality of the camera after the "good faith" purchase. The only way to restore the functionality that I purchased is to register the product and this is illegal...or unlawful....and the case would be a strong one and would be heard in court.

I am not paranoid, I am dumbfounded...and angry.

If you agree, write to me at rustyosgood at yaho o or reply to this thread (or both). I suppose they could kill the thread so...

To all those who - like me - deeply regret having updated the old iOS GoPro app to the new Capture, I found a method to get it back. It's a rather complicated process but I got it to work, and now I have my old GoPro app which doesn't require any login or Internet connection to control my camera. Follow the instructions on this site: .., it's my first post here and I am not allowed to put links or images).
A couple notes:
- Open your browser (to read the instructions) and iTunes BEFORE you start Fiddler, otherwise you'll get certificates error, and iTunes will crash when connecting to the App Store
- If you end up downloading the app (instructions tell you to stop the download right after it starts), no worries, just delete the app from iTunes (so you can download it again when needed)
- You can skip the entire part to find the ID of the old app: it's 818405041, which corresponds to GoPro app 2.15.2.1012
- When you're done, you will have an app in iTunes called GoPro but with the Capture icon
- As suggested in the instructions, copy the .ipa file from your iTunes folder into a temp folder, open it with WinZip and delete the metadata file from it (keep copies of the original .ipa just in case). Remove the app from iTunes, drag the edited .ipa into iTunes and finally drag the GoPro app on your phone.
I really think GoPro lost its bearing and in an effort to appeal to wider audiences, they are alienating their most devoted customer base.

I am so discouraged by GoPro's decision to add a login to the new GoPro tethering app now called Capture. Please read my petition for the removal...

"GoPro made the decision to require the login as it will help us better gauge how our customers use our products, and allow us to identify pain points customers may have so we can improve our future products."

GoPro promotes using their cameras in the most distant corners of the world, from removed from civilization. Yet, new since the relaunch of their tethering app now called "Capture", a login is required for use. Hundreds of consumers have complained on deaf ears about how they were locked out of being able to use the login as there was no internet or cellular access where they were shooting. Many others are complaining of Big Brother and others still don't want to incur overseas data rates just to login to an App that previously worked fine.

GoPro doesn't listen to customers, but maybe they will take notice of a petition started. GoPro has taken notice enough to begin displaying the functionality of the App on Facebook, excluding the login issue when you have no internet access. Yes, GoPro claims you can stay logged in for 30 days (results may vary as there are a number of causes that can log you out). Why should we need to login anyway, for a service, okay, for capturing and reviewing content captured, no way.

I've been a GoPro user from the GoPro 2 up to the 5 series. I was really happy with the 4 Black and I was loving the 5 Black. But… I just sold three Hero 4 Black and four Hero 5 Black cameras at a big loss because of the Capture sign in issue. I work predominantly in areas that are inaccessible to wireless communication. The random sign-in requirement is a huge deal breaker for me. I recently lost almost 2 days of shooting and had to drive for almost 200 kilometres of difficult back country roads to sign in so I could link my cameras to my various Android devices and salvage the shoot. As a result, I’ve walked away from GoPro.

Thankfully, there are a lot of options out there now. I’ve purchased a Nikon Keymission 170 and Olympus Stylus Tough Tracker (or whatever it’s called) for testing and both are viable replacements for the GoPro. The Nikon, despite its lack of FOV options has way better IQ, especially after defishing. I’m still experimenting but between these and the new DJI cameras coming out, as well as some of the smaller Panasonic 4K cameras, I’m absolutely positive I won’t miss GoPro and their crappy interface, useless accessory system and this new Capture app debacle.

See ya, GP. You won’t be missed. BTW, I’m really glad the drones have proved to be a huge failure. This egotistical company needs a kick in the butt. The irony is that they’re doing it to themselves - on multiple levels.

Question on this Capture App

I'm in the process of shopping cameras and had decided that I would probably get the GoPro Hero 4. I always read everything so when I saw that it has an app to control the functions, I went to the App Store to see what it was about. I saw that it had a ton of negative reviews about this login issue. But I was also wondering about the subscription thing. Is that new as well? Because that's the part that really turns me off more than the login since I likely won't be anywhere without cell service. Is the subscription a mandatory thing for being able to view and upload your videos or photos to social media? I've got unlimited cloud storage with Amazon and I also pay for additional cloud storage with Apple, so I feel like if I pay this much for another camera, then I shouldn't also have to pay a monthly fee in order to be able to use my videos and photos how I want to. I'm only asking because I have seen other apps do stuff like that. You can get the app for free, but if you actually want to use it, you have to pay. That's why I'm asking. I can deal with the login, but I think it'll be a deal breaker for me if I have to pay a monthly fee in order to use my stuff. Can you specify where to upload the videos to? For example, can I tell the camera to send them to my Amazon cloud or my computer or whatever?

Thanks in advance for your responses

From what I gather.
gopro cloud is not Icloud. it is gopros server you are on that, cost $$$$$$$.

Also if you need to sign in I do it in an orde rthat did pass the sign in. I go to the capture first and to the camera I want to use before I hith the control of thart camera I go then to thesetting connect wifi's and back to capture. somehow it bipasses.vI do not like the new way, but till Prizmia gets theirs updated I will use both

Gopro is about getting out htere and now doing things on the go.

You dont need internet! Your Gopro puts out it's own wifi, which you connect to with your mobile device. You can do this anywhere without internet. Just turn on your Gopro, turn on the wifi, then go to your device, wifi settings, and connect to the wifi signal your Gopro puts out. The sign in is to avoid someone other than you connecting to your Gopro and taking your material.

Login necessairy

Hi mdjphotoguy,

you are wrong. You need to login in to the app the first time you open it. This is where you need an internet connection. Only then you can change to the WIFI provided by your gopro.
This process you have to repeat every 30 days. If you happen to be in the wilderness at that time, a connection to your gopro would not be possible, since you cannot start the app without login in.

Cheers
Henry
