Yi 2 4K Action Camera - GoPro Killer? [DISCUSSION]

A lot of reviews are branding this as a 'GoPro Killer' with image quality that rivals the GoPro, if not slightly sharper! With a built in retina touch screen display on the rear, considering the first Yi camera seriously impressed, I have high hopes for this little monster and finally have a unit to play with!!
Stay tuned to the YouTube channel for the full review!!

its not a GoPro killer. If they have to copy GoPro, its not going to replace it

I actually think it could be! Ive been playing with it today, and I think its pretty awesome. The display is fantastic - retina display with Gorilla Glass thats completely capacitive - so no more hard presses etc. It uses a newer version of the Ambarella A9 chipset, the same Sony sensor, although has extra modes like image stabilisation, 3-axis gyro, accelerometer, etc. The menu system is great - works really well. Im seriously impressed.
Not tested the video quality just yet, but on paper, as long as you don't need Protune, I honestly think it could be better then the Hero 4 Black. The GoPro does have Protune going for it though!

theirs already been a few camera's that are better on paper than a GoPro, but just never are when it comes to the real world

i'm guessing the above comparison is from Yi, i'd be very interested if you can prove its 2hr battery life is right

Achieved 116 minutes - just off of the 2 hour mark!! This is down to the new version of the A9 chipset, which runs cooler and is a little more energy efficient - it wasn't available when the Black was first released which is why we got no screen on the Black due to the extra space required for the heatsink. It seems when the GoPro nears the end of its lifecycle Ambarella release the chip to others, who get newer versions etc. GoPro now need to release their new camera!!

Its been raining all day so not been able to test video quality properly yet, but indoors its pretty much the same as the GoPro Black (non-Protune). Im still impressed by the menu system and that rear screen though - easily the best Ive ever seen on an action camera (and Ive been through a fair few!).

Will see how the image quality holds up as thats what will make or break this camera!

Just completed my review of this little beast (video will be live soon!) and hands down I can say that this is probably the best action camera available at the moment, when you consider what you get for the amount you pay.
If you want a straight up answer as to whether its better then a GoPro Hero 4 Black - then yes, yes it is.

The comparison is a little unfair, since the Yi uses newer technology and the Hero4 Black is using technology thats rather old in comparison. But if you want the best bang for your buck today, then the Yi 4K is where its at.

The hardware is superb. The retina screen is gorgeous, and its capacitive, so works with the slightest touch, like a smartphone screen. The camera only has one button on the entire device, yet the menu system is fantastic - quicker and easier to use then the GoPro.

The smartphone app isn't as feature rich then the GoPro, but does a wonderful job.

The video quality is superb. The newest update has added Flat colour modes and Sharpness settings, similar to GoPro's Protune, yet the default point and shoot settings are ever so slightly better then the GoPro Hero 4 Black.

Seriously, at half the cost of the Hero 4 Black, its a no brainer. This is hands down the best bang for your buck action camera out there right now. GoPro have a new camera in the works which will most likely use newer hardware and further features that'll most likely outperform though - its inevitable. I just hope they introduce something special though, since the competition has seriously caught up!

Great to hear you are enjoying the Yi model. I guess It may make it to my collection as It is hard to find the Hero 4 Silver for $199.99, I should have picked it up when I had that chance at Costco/Price Club, a warehouse store, they dump discontinued items in bulk, and also sells new items as well.

1. Do you think it is fair to compare as a hero 4 Silver to the Yi 2 4K, due to the lcd screens? And then it would clearly put to shame the Hero 4 Silver? Seems the Yi is the leader to the Market with their version now, putting pressure to Gopro to get their version out?

I wonder if GoPro 's next camera is going to be with a sessions armor and a lcd screen?

2 Yi 2 4K with gopro One button capture, does the Yi 2 4K do the same, does it use the top button for recording?

3. Some of the video I seen are Warm? one nighttime video resembled the Kodaks night shot, golden,

4. with a pair of gloves, knowing the retina won't pick up, with special gloves?

5. Height wise to the T or is it off by a cm. Y is working and most lily have their Gimbal out soon?

6. Do you need to use the App to run the camera, you can change all setting by the camera alone 100%?

7. the files are >mov if I am not mistaken for video?

Just some questions I thought I ask, I got a few more but that will help others if they are interested down the road.

I agree I pick one up if it is To the T with the settings, If it does not have one or two, would that be important to stop your purchase> Price wise $250.00 vs $450 (BE) 350(SE) I am happy it is not Jpeg video and audio .

1. No. Its fair to compare the YI 4K with the Hero 4 Black, not the silver, since the YI 4K has all the same features of the Black - ie. 4K/30fps recording, same burst modes, and so on. Its using a newer chipset then the Hero 4 Black too, so runs cooler overall. As we know, it also has a screen at the same time. It far exceeds the Hero 4 Silver and is in direct competition with the Hero 4 Black in my opinion.

2. I haven't checked for one button capture to be honest. I don't think there is an option for it. The top button is pressed once to switch camera on, and then once to start capture - saying that, it does power up a lot quicker then the GoPro in the first place, so even with a double tap to start recording its probably just as quick as the GoPro.

3. A new Flat mode is now available, with adjustable sharpness settings, just like Protune - so you can now tweak the video so its just like you want it

4. The same as a smartphone I guess - so gloves would hinder the ability to operate the display. At the same time, so would using the camera in a waterproof housing, which is a downside.

5. The width of the camera is slightly different to the GoPro. Its lighter overall, but also feels cheaper then a GoPro. Don't think it would fit in GoPro gimbals, but I'm sure there will be some kind of adapter available soon making it compatible - just like the Session adapters making the Session compatible with many gimbals etc.

6. No. I very rarely used the app with my GoPros, and I don't use the app with the YI either. Just like the GoPro, everything can be done on camera. I find it a lot easier!

7. Very similar to GoPro, with a low resolution file for use within the app, and then the full resolution file to use while editing

Video review will be out in the next 1-2 days!

thank you.

Q1 that I was just thinking, and knowing GPH4BE be the comparison. When gopro comes out then you can truly compare this cam to that. that be the real test. gopro get your act together.

Q2 the one capture , with gopro is LAG and with the Yi to turn on is up to date, gopro should have not have a Lag in todays time at all, why it has a slow boot who knows I have an Aiptek that went from 8 seconds to 3 seconds. gopro had all the time in the world to correct that, never did.

Q3 Firmware is correcting and adding I rather see a txt file that we can do our own modding with settings like the Mobius camera turning other features on replacing no, swapping to use at the mean time yes and I guess there is no time stamp to be turned on or off in video?

Q5 width is a cm or two wisder, but height is what I asked if the height is to the T it will fit. that besomething you can do to take a measurement when given a chance. and highlight, thanks

Q6 glad to know

Q7 is it a.MOV file
