GoPro Hero Dilemma...Which One Now??

I currently own the Hero 3 Silver edition, but just picked up an Evo SS Gimbal to go with it. Only problem with the Hero 3 is I want to now shoot in HD and it doesn't do that. So I moved my seach to the Hero 4 Black, but the problem with that is it doesn't have the touch screen which I love on the Hero 3. One of the great things about the Hero3 Silver and the Hero 4 Black is they have great audio capabilities. As I now move on to the Hero 5 and Hero 6, I'm reading online that the audio qualities of these are crap. Am I wrong?? I didn't think this would be such a difficult decision to move on from the Hero 3. Can I get the thoughts of the forum on which way to proceed. I use my GoPro predominantly for mountain biking.

Hero 7 black has somehow improved the audio over 5 / 6 ,but its still not very clear. There are many videos on youtube that show how the audio sounds on each of them.

The question is , do you really need that crystal clear audio when mountainbiking? I certainly dont. I almost always cover the entire video with music overlay anyway.

You could have gone for 7 black and you wouldnt need a gimbal. And you can still plug in external mic into your phone to record sounds and then sync in post process.

I didnt understand that first sentence tho, what do you mean that Hero 3 doesnt shoot HD? Even Hero2 shot HD video.

TLDR: Go for 7 BLACK, you wont regret

Thanks Boz. I should have said it doesn't shoot 4K. I've watched so many YT videos this past week till the wee hours of the morning that I feel like I should work for GoPro You're right though about the "sound quality" when mountain biking. It's just that the consensus majority of the YT videos I've watched in regards to the Hero 5 & 6 made it sound like they weren't even close to having an acceptable level of quality.

I've looked at the 7 Black as well. Great little camera, but I still feel the Evo SS gimbal will give me better stability over a wider spectrum of riding than the built in of the 7 Black. Could be wrong, but I know guy's using the Evo and have seen the results. That's whet steered me to it in the end.

Thanks Fish. I didn't give the Silver 4 a look yet. I've looked at the full line up of GoPro's, as well the Sony RX0, ThiEye, YI, Garmin etc, etc. Definitely a plethora of action cams out at this moment in time.

Kevin.

All the Hero cameras since the Hero HD shoot HD video. I think you are meaning 4k video which the Hero 3 Silver does not shoot. The Hero 4 Black and EVO SS Gimbal are the gold standard for chesty mountain biking currently mainly because the audio is great. The Hero 5, 6, and 7 series cameras will not give you the audio quality of the Hero 4 Black because to make the camera waterproof without the housing, there is a membrane over the microphones which causes the obvious decrease in audio quality.

Which one to go with depends on how much you value audio quality. If audio quality is an absolute must, stick with the Hero 4 Black and EVO SS Gimbal - The Hero 4 Black does not have an LCD screen whereas the Hero 4 Silver does and to be honest - you won't miss the screen. The GoPro's wide angle is so that you can point it in the general direction and you would be good but if an LCD screen and audio is an absolute, then go with the Hero 4 Silver with the same gimbal.

If video quality is on the highest importance, get the Hero 7 Black. The question of having to use a gimbal with the Hero 7 Black can be debated and depends on how stickler you are for perfection in your stabilization. The Hypersmooth on the Hero 7 Black is very superb and in my opinion you could ditch the gimbal and be happy with it but since you already own the gimbal - just get the housing for the Hero 7 Black to work with the gimbal and you would be good. But the difference in quality is very minute.
