The Competition: JVC's Adixxion Action Cam
The JVC Addixxion GC-XA2 camera was revealed this week. As JVC's second attempt at competing in the POV camera market, the Addixxion already proved itself worthy of competing with GoPro with the first model that came out last year. The first Addixxion was pretty impressive, featuring waterproofing, shockproofing and Wi-Fi remote capture without the requirement of external accessories. The new model promises more improvements, which should make for some good competition between JVC and GoPro. The new model has some important differences in the sensor and lens; it is based around an 8 megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS censor instead of the standard 5 megapixel CMOS chip. The XA2 offers full HD capture (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) at 60 frames/second. At 720p you can double the framerate to 120 fps, for a 4x slow-motion capture. The new sensor sits behind a wider-angle prime lens with f/2.4 aperture. Other changes include: time lapse and high-speed burst image capture, 5x digital zoom, simultaneous still and video capture, improved audio quality, new video effects, longer battery life, faster WiFi, and new apps for Android/iOS that allow for Addixxion camera monitoring.
So, anyone tried the JVC cameras? I really like that no separate housing is required and that basically half the GoPro accessories I need are actually integrated right into the camera itself. They sound like impressive and durable cameras but I've never seen one in person and would like a better comparison of the two.
