Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you.

Subject - The difference between micro cards

Response Via Email (Kenneth K.) 12/26/2012 11:20 AM

Dear Robert,
Thanks for emailing SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make sure you have all the resources you need to get the most from your product.

I understand that you need a Class 10 SD card for your Go Pro camera and you want to know the difference between Ultra SD and Ultra Micro SD cards. Please note that Go Pro manufactures 3 models Go Pro Hero, Hero 2 and Hero 3. Since you did not specify the exact model we will let you know about the compatible cards supported by all these cameras.

The recommended cards for Go Pro Hero and Hero 2 are SanDisk Extreme Class 10 45MB/s and Extreme Pro Class 10 95MB/s SD/SDHC cards. These cameras can support upto 32 GB SD/SDHC cards. Please refer to the link mentioned below to know more about these cards:
Please go to the following link to know more about these cards:
http://www.sandisk.com/products/memory-cards/sd/

The recommended cards for Hero 3 camera are SanDisk Ultra Class 10 and Extreme Pro Class 10 Micro SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. Please refer to the link mentioned below to know more about these cards:

http://www.sandisk.com/products/memory-cards/microsd/

Also, you can purchase the cards from the above specified links and you can use promo code Q229R to avail additional 10% discount.
Also note that apart from the physical size there is no difference between Ultra SD and Ultra Micro SD cards. Both the cards are 30MB/s Class 10 UHS-I cards. The Micro SD cards can also be converted to a full size SD card with a help of SD adapter.

Please be informed that the SD/Micro SD cards ranging from 128MB to 2GB are called SD cards and SD stands for Secure Digital. The SD/Micro SD cards ranging from 4 to 32 GB are called SDHC cards and SDHC stands for Secure Digital High Capacity. The SD/Micro SD cards ranging from 64GB to 2TB are called SDXC cards and SDXC stands for Secure Digital Extended Capacity

Also, you can visit http://kb.sandisk.com, our online keyword searchable Knowledgebase, to easily find answers to your Technical Support and Customer Service questions for all of SanDisk's products. Simply enter your search terms and our Knowledgebase will search an extensive database of commonly asked questions as well as our online forums at http://www.sandisk.com/sandisk-support/forums to provide you with the most complete answers possible.

Best regards,
Kenneth K.

LOL@Sandisk trying to make a buck! You don't need anything faster than Class 6 for the first two GoPros. Maybe Class 10 if you're using Protune on the GoPro 2. Class 10 is suggested for the GoPro 3s. You don't need anything near 45 or 95MB/s. The max bitrate that the GoPro 3 Black uses in Protune, the maximum quality you'll get out of the camera, is 6MB/s.

The red and gray cards in the link below are what's suggested and sold by GoPro themselves:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sandisk%20ultra%20micro%20sd&sprefix=sandisk%20ultra%20micro,aps,185&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Asandisk%20ultra%20micro%20sd
BTW, I know at least the GoPro 2 supports 64GB cards, as I had one before I got my GoPro 3 Black. And of course, the newest GoPros support 64GB (and possibly 128GB once it arrives).

Default What do you recomend

Hi.

So the only difference between using a SDHC and SDXC card in your GoProHero3 Black is that you can get SDXC cards with more capacity? There are no differences in quality when using a sdxc card or sdhc?

Thanks for the help

New gopro 3 user here, looking to buy a card. I thought it was worth noting in this thread that the speeds quoted are the read speeds. They are very different to the write speeds. Eg I was just looking at the "Samsung MicroSDXC 64GB Class 10 Pro 70MB/s Memory Card" and note in the fine print the speeds are: Class 10 (70 MB/sec Read with UHS-1, 20MB/sec Write with UHS-1)

So, the faster cards seem to write the same speed as each other, but the extra speed will be nice when you are trying to move gigabytes of footage to your pc, if you have a fast dedicated card reader (like many laptops do).

My mate has a hero3 which we were using on the weekend, and it was a sandisk extreme and I gotta admit getting about 48mb/s read was nice at the end of a long track day. Do you need it? no. But its still worthy of being recommended.

I've got a GoPro Hero 3 Black, i've got the sandisk 64gb Ultra disk and it's fine for recording 720 at 60fps, but the higher resolutions on that or higher frame rates struggles to keep up.

This leads to a laggy video recording, it appears that the Class 10 specification that i was looking for isn't the only requirement.
I'm looking to film some more slow motion, so need a card that can keep up with the higher frame rates.
The sandisk Extreme has the 95mb/s write speed so that should do the job, problem is the price!

Pricing is always a problem with memory card. Even worse is seeing how the prices on them depreciate a 6 months to a year later (which fly's by quickly).

I find Lexar to be a great price, a bit pricey, but I NEVER Had issues with them and they have quite a good range of memory cards.

Are you sure that the "laggyness" is not the PC on which you're viewing. As one previous poster has said, the maximum write speed required at the highest Protune definition is 45Mb/Sec, which equates to less than 6MB/sec. Even the lowest spec Class10 SD Card can handle that. Plus the new firmware includes a feature to throttle the data stream rate to 35Mb/Sec for lower spec SD Cards.

If you wanna use the hero 3 Black to record in the cinema quality res then you'll need an equivalent computer processor to play around with the footage
