Default Hero2 vs White vs Silver vs Black

Hi,

Im doing a review on the new Hero3 cameras, and during the testing i have made some comparison shoots. I hope you find the video interesting, and suggestions are very welcome. I still have the White, Silver and Black edition available, so if you would like to see any kind of comparison shoots, please let me know.

Here is a preview of the video for the review. Im not here to draw people to the site i review for, so if im violating anything with this video, please let me know

I have both Black Edition and the Silver Edition Hero 3's here and after playing with both of them I noticed the footage from the Black Edition is much darker (like in your video) and has a different colour to it. I seem to have more problems with the Black Edition than I do with the Silver Edition. The one thing I don't like about the Black Edition is the battery power, especially with the wifi turned on, it's short lived. The other thing I don't like about the Black Edition is, if your computer is not up to speed, many of the settings in the Black Edition are useless to you.
If I had know back then what I know now, I don't think I would have bought the Black Edition and just gone for the Silver Edition.
Great Video

Default Thanks

Thanks

But what settings cant you use on a average/below average computer? Im asking because i have seen a few complaining about laggy playback of 120fps footage. And i think thats pretty normal when you think about it. 30fps is the "normal" speed of videos, and 60fps gives that nice flow. Above that should only be used for slow motion in my opinion.

Also, if you play the video on a PC, the screen would in most cases only run at 60HZ, wasting half of the frames of the video.

One of the last things im testing is overheating. Have you had any problems with that?

I have seen a lot complain about it, so i took mine and set it to 1080@60fps and wrapped it in a cloth, and let it run for 50 min. It was so hot that the display on the camera went darker than normal. And it was so hot that you wouldnt think it was good for it. But i was still running and ran to it had no more power. And there was unusual to see on the footage. So i dont know what to think

Default I have problems with 60fps

I have problems with 60fps and the 120fps but I expected that for the 120 but I don't have any with 30fps.
I haven't really tried the 120fps much and I know it's my computer not the camera.

Both my camera's get quite hot but nothing I'm really worried about.

I have noticed a big difference between the Silver Edition and Black Edition.
I noticed the Black Edition video footage is much more saturated and darker than the Silver Edition, I've also noticed with the Black Edition if I shoot in high contrast areas, on the sides of the video footage (in my case any way) there tends to be some purple fringing, especially around trees or building edges. For example if the sky appears very bright with clouds but the foreground is very dark, you can actually see a purple tinge on outlines of trees etc.

I did email GoPro asking why my Black Edition seems to have this problem but not the Silver Edition (well not that I have noticed). As it turned out, in some cases, the lens has not been cleaned properly when it leaves the manufacturer and in my case there was a very fine purple film covering the lens. When I cleaned it off, it is better but there is still a slight purple tinge. I have noticed the lens colouring itself is also darker then the silver edition. If you hold them side by side in the sunlight, you can actually see the lens (glass) are different. the Silver Edition appears much clearer than the Black Edition. I had never noticed that before and don't know if this accounts for the purple fringing that appears on my videos in the Black Edition?

Since I have noticed it in my videos, I've been looking on youtube at other footage from the Black Edition and in some cases, I see they too have the purple fringing, especially when tree tops meet bright cloudy skies, so I guess I'm not alone. Have you ever noticed anything like that?

If I could fix the purple fringing, I would be extremely happy with both editions but the purple fringing seems to bother me, hence why I don't think I would recommend the Black Edition.

One last thing, the wifi connection seems to drain the battery faster, but that's really no big drama for me, just buy an extra battery.

Still with all it's little quirks, for me it's still beats many video camera's you'd buy for the same price. If only it had a zoom!

Default What CPU do you have in your

What CPU do you have in your computer?

Some video players arent happy with 60fps and above. Have you tried using VLC? Thats the one i use, and i have seen recomended. I actually think i saw GoPro recomending it also.

About the purple teint, i havent noticed anything. But i dont really have any footage with the conditions you describe. Could you show me an example, so i can try and replicate it?

I have seen others talking about that purple teint, but one of them was clearly a falty lense, since it was in a spot on the lense, and not an entire coating. But i think its quite normal you get that wierd looking surface on the lense, when its not cleaned. I have it on my digital camera, if it hasent been wiped for a while. So i believe its just the coating of the lense, that acts that way.

I do also see a clear difference on the Silver and Black lenses. The Black does indeed look a little darker, but the parts in the lenses are also different. So that might also trick the eye. The little ring in the lense on black, doesnt have the markings thats on the Silver. And the lense on White is actually also a lot different from the 2 others.

But one thing is for sure. You cant deny the outstanding low light performance of Black. On the last clip in the video, i actually thought i might had set the Black to Protune OFF, because it didnt have any blue period like Hero2 and Silver. On the other test i did, it performed just as good. And that was from totally dark.

Default Looking at this (in smaller

Looking at this (in smaller windows) I must admit the Hero2 looks the best for me .... Didn't expect that tbh.

Default Tox I have a Intel Duo Core

Tox I have a Intel Duo Core CPU 3.00GHz and 4 gig of ram.
My Mac computer also has problems running the 60fps and 120fps.
While I can play the 60fps, as soon as there's panning, the video jerks.
I also use VLC media player to view the footage.
However, once the footage has been rendered in an editor, even with the jerky bits,
it seems to play fine. It's the editing that is difficult to do.
I will find a screenshot of the purple fringing and post it. Thanks.

It what way do you think it looks better? The video is only about how they do in different lighting. To see the exact quality compared it would have to be a full screen split.

I don't have the Hero2 available anymore, and I think I have dirty lenses on the ferry footage since some of it it pretty blurry. There the White looks to have a much clearer picture but ill test that tomorrow I think. I did get some water spray on the cams right before the ferry came in, so I think that is the problem.

Keeks, That sounds weird.I have only tried to play videos on pretty powerfull machines, but I didn't think that it required that mutch power.

A picture would be great. Just so I can see the situation. I checked the lenses on mine and all looked good. One of them had a little color near the edge where I hadn't wiped it properly. But as I said before, I think that is normal.
