User tagging!
Mar 31, 2014 - 5:12 PM - by Ifti
Hi all,
Just a quick notice to inform you all of a newly added feature to the forum - user tagging!

If you wish to pull someone into a thread, simply place a '@' symbol before the username of that said person.

For example, if I create a thread and am sure the user 'fishycomics' could have some valuable information, or could help, I can simply call that person to the post by adding @fishycomics

What this does is sends a notification to that user, who will be directed towards the post where he/she has been mentioned.

A simple, yet very useful, feature!

Will smartphone cameras make the GoPro obsolete?
Mar 14, 2014 - 4:28 PM - by Slurm!
It seems that smartphones are becoming more and more capable. They can take pictures of higher and higher quality. You can download apps to do photo and video editing right on your phone, and all this is doable from an item that most people have in their pocket every minute of the day. With smartphone technology continuing to advance every year, will the GoPro have a place at the table in the not so distant future?

Currently the action camera market is still growing. Last year sales grew by 37 percent to a total of 1.3 million units sold in 2013. Is this a trend that is poised to slow down, or will the growth continue?

One of the things that sets the GoPro apart from smartphone cameras are the wealth of accessories that are compatible with it. Mounts for your head, chest, the end of a pole, and even underwater are all available. These give users the ability to film themselves doing more intense action oriented tasks than a handheld smartphone. One has to wonder when these types of accessories will be available for smartphones though.

Already there are accessories like the iPhone SLR Mount which allows you to fix Canon EOS or Nikon SLR lenses to your iPhone 5. Another accessory, the Zgrip iPhone Jr, lets would-be photographers stabilize their smartphone too. I haven't found many accessories that are particularly geared towards action sports and activities though.

This seems to be the one area that puts the GoPro ahead of its smartphone competitors (for now?) Those people who are skydiving, scuba diving, and doing other extreme sports need more than a tri-pod and a lens. They need something that can stand up to harsh conditions and still get amazing footage. The Go Pro delivers on this.

How long until similar accessories come out for the iPhone though? How long until iPhones are made to be waterproof, and with stronger screens that won't break when they fall on the sidewalk? Those advances must not be too far in the future, and when they do come along, where will that leave the GoPro?

I think that it is inevitable that smartphones will be able to do as much and more than the GoPro eventually. How can GoPro grow and adapt when that day arrives?
